it's been maybe the strangest thanksgiving I've had... but not all bad... thanks to the magic of christmas bonuses, I've been able to get lots of things taken care of, debts extinguished and such... and even had enough left over for some gadgets... like the t-mobile sidekick I'm typing this on... yay for wireless blogging! fuck. sometimes, i feel like i don't belong to the human species. sometimes, i feel like i'm the only one that missed the memo. like everybody else is living their lives around me according to some arbitrary set of rules that i just don't know about. i thought i was supposed to stop feeling those things, oh, around age 18. but no. worst of all - i'm 28 years old, and for the life of me, i just don't understand women. girls. just don't understand how they think. on monday, i got an e-mail from william safire. (not in his capacity as a conservative pundit but rather as the nyt's currently anointed arbiter of language.) i grammar-geeked out and sent him a question and he answered it within the day. that was pretty cool. on tuesday, i got a random e-mail from an ex-girlfriend i hadn't talked to in years, and a random late-night call from another... both were very nice, but two ex-girlfriend experiences in one day is still kind of weird. on today - wednesday night - i picked up a jawbreaker from a bowl of leftover halloween candy as i left work, and let's just say my second lower left molar met it's match. i'd say i lost about a quarter of the tooth, leaving a big, sharp hole facing the inside of my mouth, conveniently placed to irritate my tongue as much as possible. oddly, there's been no pain at all - yet - but even so, this does not bode well for my original plan of not having any root canals in the immediate future. i went to the voodoofest music festival in city park yesterday. i wasn't going to go - it's a little pricey, at $40, but i figured it was ok, and i'd regret not going because iggy pop and the stooges (original lineup!) were playing, and that's kind of a historic opportunity. so i went. the first show we saw was mos def, which was pretty cool, until he brought out talib kweli - his former partner in black star - which made it worth the price of admission right there. good stuff. then we watched the roots for a little while, and dj swamp (best known for his work with beck) and then on to iggy. and that was an experience. the man was spastic and screaming all over the stage and it didn't seem as if age has had any effect on his energy at all. what did seem odd was that his brand of anger seemed kind of quaintly outdated - flipping off the audience, shouting random insults, all rather tame: punk rage, 70s style - just not that offensive in today's world. but definitely fun to see, and a good show overall.
since amy and i broke up a few months ago, i've been seeing an incredible amount of live music. it's been a good few months for that on the new orleans scene, for music of just about every sort i like. i've seen an uncommon amount of hiphop over the past month or so - dalek at the mermaid, doseone and jel at the hi-ho lounge, lyrics born at the house of blues, and now black star at voodoo. plus turntablists: dj swamp at voodoo and kid koala at the parish. and punk: first lightning bolt at some warehouse in mid-city, and now the stooges. and even alt.country and indie rock: the new pornographers, songs:ohia, richard buckner, and built to spill. and the best part of it all is that i've made some really great new friends who like the same music i do, and i don't have to go to shows alone anymore. which makes me happy. |
