july, july, july... never seemed so strange. how apt. been listening to the decemberists lately. good god this place is in need of updating. i think that's next. i've added stencil-graffiti to my list of media/techniques lately. (only on paper & canvas - no unauthorized surfaces. i'm not that good.) fun with x-acto knives and spraypaint. my design style kind of lends itself to the medium though, and although the production part can be kind of tedious, the end results tend to be at least interesting, and sometimes pretty cool. i'm looking at it as a step on my way to teaching myself how to silkscreen, so i can make my own real live posters. like these guys and these guys , both of whom i'm pretty much idolizing at the moment. that'll be nice. that'll be the day. too, i forgot to mention that amy and i saw "pirates of the carribean" last weekend and it was amazing. i continue to believe that depp is the best actor going, and this movie doesn't take itself seriously at all, despite a good, pirate-y story, excellent visual effects, a smart script, and great acting. which in my opinion puts it in the running for princess bride-like greatness. and i know that's saying a lot. i also particularly loved the use of visual homages to the disneyworld pirates of the carribean ride throughout the movie. good stuff. i recommend. i love my job, there's no question about that - i get to do something i enjoy everyday - but today i learned firsthand that competitors and even clients in my industry of choice can be as mean and backstabbing as in any other profession i know. although i knew it was true, it's severely disappointing to see such bad behavior in adults. happy birthday to me! my gift to myself tonight was going to see the dismemberment plan at twiropa mills. it was a great live show, as energetic and alive as any show i've ever been to, and fun - there was no setlist, just requests, and travis morrison (the lead singer, who's shorter than i expected) picked me about halfway through. he called me "the nice guy in the glasses" - as opposed to the jerkoff (also in glasses) standing in front of me who kept trying to scream out whatever song he wanted. i asked for "sentimental man," a favorite of mine due to lines like "i'm an old testament kind of guy... i like my coffee black, and my parole denied, yeah." well, maybe you'd have to hear it. anyway. they played all the songs i wanted to hear; and to end it they played a crazy medley of covers, many of which i couldn't quite make out - but i did make out such diverse tunes as juvenile's "back dat ass up" and the postal service's "such great heights" (which is an amazing song, by the way.) great show, and a nice way to start my birthday. so i'm 28. how odd that seems. .. to sleep, and then to work.....
