i was writing a whole big post about how i feel about this war. but then i was just now watching the oscars, and i watched adrian brody accept his award for best actor in the pianist about thirty seconds ago, and god damn if he didn't say it all, poignantly and succinctly. unlike michael moore, whose lack of subtlety made him come off like a boorish pig. tonight, i went to see cat power; i've always been fascinated by chan marshall, and it was a really nice show, in a funny way. she reminds me a lot of victoria williams - kind of a cross between victoria williams and bjork and margo timmins (of the cowboy junkies) because she's got that quiet childlike innocence thing: the kind of giggly, silly-face approach to what you can tell she's enjoying, but at the same time an unhideable, heartfelt disgust with all the things that are wrong with the world. her singing - like those other three - is beautiful in a quiet kind of way, just totally unlike anything else out there, and in person, you can hear every raspy nuance... coincidentally, pitchforkmedia.com just published an interview with chan today, which is worth reading. you get the same feelings from reading her interview as you do in concert. she's definitely herself on stage. genuine. i've taken to bringing my camera into concerts when i can get away with it, lately, and when i remember to bring it ...no flash photos, i think that's rude - so consequently they tend to be blurry, but i don't mind that so much. you get the real color of the experience that way, and sometimes you capture a little bit more than just an image, and maybe get a little of the spirit of the performance in there. i think this shot from tonight might have a bit of that. i took this one during the last song of the set - an amazing cover of the white stripes "dead leaves and the dirty ground." see the smile? ![]() (come to think of it, you probably don't. click for a pop-up.) scared? war, plague and fish talking in hebrew? strange times. ( not that any given time doesn't have it's share of strange and ominous occurrances. but these seem stranger than ususal, maybe? ) Wednesday, March 12, 2003
so, like, they've gotta be fucking kidding me. "freedom fries." whatever. this shit's not even funny anymore. what is kinda funny is the the beastie boys new protest song mp3, just released on their website. i guess with all those good intentions they didn't have time for quality control, cause the song just sucks. i just got back from seeing godspeed you black emperor. it was pretty much what i expected, which is to say it was fucking phenomenally powerful, and it was great just to stand there and let the music/noise crest and fall and breathe and wash over you and feel the bass resonating in your bones. even so, maybe because they played mostly from their new album, which i'm less familiar with, but didn't feel the movement of emotion i've had from some of their cds...hmm. instead of lights, there were three synchronized film projectors, showing film of bulidings and people and cities and scenes from everyday life, which when soundtracked to gsybe's slow, repeating crescendos, was reminiscent of koyaanisqatsi. the crowd was an interesting mix - the hippie-jam-band types, the goths, the indie-rock crowd, the art scene... it's mardi gras day, and i slept through most of the parades. and not because i was drunk - haven't really done much drinking this time around - just tired - it's been a long, long weekend. even the greatest free show on earth loses a bit of its attraction after 27 years... Saturday, March 01, 2003
mardi gras = parade + party + drunk people + mud = good time had by all + dirty ass carpet.
at which point, you've got to wonder: what' s an "ass carpet"? |
