another two weeks and not so much as a peep out of me, and not much for two months before that... but don't go eulogizing yet. i'm here. 2003 so far hasn't been exceedingly good or bad or anything else. it's been ok. and it's harder to write, i think, when things are just ok, than when they're at either extreme. or maybe that's just an excuse - obviously, i've needed a break - but i'm still here, and i fully intend to resume a healthier posting schedule, and soon.
ever seen pyrex bakeware explode? i didn't think it did either, but i've got a cut on my right index finger that says it does. last thursday, amy and i had some friends over to my place for crepes and stuff ( amy gave me a crepe pan for christmas. for some unexplained reason - could be that i like crepes, i guess - i've always been strangely attracted to crepe pans whenever i enter a store that carries such things, and apparently said so on enough occasions that she got me one to shut me up.) anyway, i decided i'd also make some rosemary focaccia i saw on the naked chef a while back. made my dough, and laid it out in the biggest baking pan i had, which was a pyrex. you bake this stuff at a pretty high heat - 475 or so - for about ten minutes, after which i took it out with an oven mitt, and placed it on a dry, room temperature plastic cutting board, because there was no room anywhere else in my itty-bitty kitchen. count one second, then bam! (no pun intended) the sides of the the pan exploded. didn't just crack, they exploded forcefully away from the center, sending shards of heat resistant, unbreakable glass everywhere. nobody was hurt, fortunately. until, that is, i decided to cut the sides off of the bread to salvage it, and cut my finger on a piece of glass. served me right, but the focaccia i was able to save turned out really well, safe and glass free. point being, pyrex explodes. i didn't know that. |
